Look, we've all been there. Feeling stuck. Feeling overwhelmed. Drowning in our thoughts. Feeling like there's a black cloud hovering above us. For days when you find yourself struggling to find the light, here are 3 things you can do to regain your best self in 2023.
1. Be physically active.
I'm not saying you have to run a marathon or lift 10 kg weights. All I'm saying is.......MOVE. There are days where I can barely bring myself to get out of bed, and I know that laying in bed and wallowing in self-pity are only going to make things worse. On those days, I force myself to take a walk around my home. Or if I really push myself, perhaps I end up at a yoga class, or doing a 30 minute workout at the gym. When you're physically active, you release "feel good" chemicals in your brain (which yes....makes you feel good).
2. Keep a gratitude journal
What you focus on is what grows. When you focus more on LACK, your sense of unhappiness grows. When you focus on ABUNDANCE, you acknowledge how fortunate you are. Here are things I am mindful to jot down in my gratitude journal: I'm grateful for my peaceful home, I'm grateful for my legs that help me move around, I'm grateful for the hot water in my shower, I'm grateful for my clients, I'm grateful I get to work remotely etc. Look at what already exists in your life that makes your life easier. It's easy for us to say we want new shoes, but do we ever take the thing to express gratitude for the shoes that we already have (which makes our life easier when we're walking from point A to B)?
3. Do one small task
Declutter a drawer. Pack away 2 pairs of shoes that you want to donate. Throw out old paperwork. Just one, small, doable task. As we accomplish smaller tasks, we feel more motivated to take on bigger tasks. The momentum leads us on an upward trajectory. So the next time you're in a funk, and you're wondering what to do to feel better.....just ask yourself what's one small task that you've been putting off?
